Stanford’s Caution Cardinal Wins Gene Fleming Breeders’ Derby

Phoenix, AZ (May 3, 2024) – Caution Cardinal, the 3-year-old son of Stanford, closed determinedly to win the $66,278 Gene Fleming Breeders’ Derby at Turf Paradise.

Getting the worst of it at the start, Caution Cardinal rated kindly for jockey Leslie Marwing in fifth for the first six furlongs of the mile and one-sixteenth trip. Around the final turn, the pair moved first around the outside and then found abundant room along the rail for the stretch drive. With the wire coming, the leader’s advantage kept narrowing and at the wire, Caution Cardinal proved a nose best.

Bred in Arizona by Regan John Wright and Allan Chatham, he is out of the winning Mr. Greeley mare, Ms. Caution. He races for Barro Racing LLC and Joe Frey, Jr. and he is trained by Chad Story.
