Catholic Boy Colts Smokes Them in $150,000 Caesers Handicap

Indianapolis, IN (May 14, 2025) – Smoken Boy, the 3-year-old son of Catholic Boy now lays claim to being a stakes winner at two and three after his victory over multiple stakes winner Chasing Liberty in the $150,000 Caesars Handicap going a mile and seventy yards at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

Smoken Boy had been keeping company this winter with the top Derby prospects in Florida. Moving into the Midwest, the spring rains kept him from making his turf debut in todays contest, but the surface switch was not an issue. The gray colt hopped a bit at the start but he was quickly tracking the pacesetter from the outside. He moved closer around the turn and at the top of the stretch, the two became three. The leader was the first back away, but Smoken Boy and Chasing Liberty hooked-up in a battle to the wire. Smoken Boy would not give in to his rival and proved game to the wire to prevail by a head.

Smoken Boy was bred by Robert LaPenta and he was produced by the stakes-placed Cairo Prince mare, Smoken Deb. Racing for KEM Stables and trained by Cheryl Winebaugh, he has won in four of his seven starts and he has earned $164,993.
