Three Winners and a New Stakes Horse for Stanford on May 3
Arcadia, CA (May 3, 2025) – Stanford, who currently is the Leading California Sire by number of wins and Co-Leading California sire by number of winners, had three winners and a new stakes horse on Derby Day, including two at Santa Anita Park.
First up was Spotted Haze, the 3-year-old filly who earned her second win in three starts in the 5th race at the Great Race Place, a five and one-half furlong main track allowance. Chasing the pacesetter from the outside, she got the best of that one in the final sixteenth to win by three-quarters of a length.
Spotted Haze was bred by Robert Mitchell and she was produced by the Eddington mare, Devilish Pro. Trained by Jeff Mullins, she races for Jay Mangoonian and Julie Mangoonian, who raced her half-brother, the multiple stakes-placed Colt Fiction.
Stanford’s second winner on the card was the 5-year-old mare Nene Diamond, who highlighted the versatility of his progeny by earning her win over the firm turf course over allowance foes in the 10th race.
A full field of twelve assembled for the six furlong dash. Breaking from post 9, Nene Diamond tracked the pace down the backstretch and was ready to roll around the turn, but she had to wait for room. The gap came with a furlong to run and she flew home to catch the game pacesetter and win by a half-length in 1:08.92.
She has won or placed in seven of her nine career starts and she has earned $191,352 for owner Slugo Racing. Trained by Mike Puype, she was bred by Bar C Racing Stables, Inc. Her dam is the winning Discreet Cat mare, Joyce and Me.
Moving eastward, Stanford’s newest black-type earner is the 2-year-old Tommy Norris, who finished third in the $60,000 Turf Paradise Spring Open Futurity over five furlongs at the Phoenix oval.
Racing for Rockingham Ranch and trained by Justin Evans, he was bred by Richard Barton Enterprises. He is out of the winning Ministers Wild Cat mare, Minister’sadventure.
Stanford’s final winner was the 3-year-old filly The Coquette, who broke her maiden by more than eight lengths at Evangeline Downs. Bred by Tommy Town Thoroughbreds, she was produced by the winning Candy Ride (ARG) mare, Island Candy.
