Defending U.S. Horse of the Year California Chrome had Robbie Mills aboard for the first time April 15 at Newmarket, getting acquainted with the rider who will be his regular partner in the Rae Guest yard.

A video posted to Youtube by Rae Guest Racing shows a short clip of the 4-year-old California-bred jogging behind 3-year-old maiden Tell Me Another in his first day ridden at Newmarket. Owners Steve Coburn and Perry Martin of DAP Racing shipped California Chrome to England to compete in the June 17 Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Eng-I) with a potential prep in the May 16 J.T. Lockinge Stakes (Eng-I).

Art Sherman will remain the trainer of record for last year’s winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I). His son and assistant trainer Alan Sherman has scheduled a trip to Guest’s yard to check up on the stable star in about a month.

California Chrome, second in the March 28 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I), currently has a 9-3-1 record from 18 starts with earnings of $6,322,650. He earned Horse of the Year honors and was named the champion 3-year-old male of 2014 at the Eclipse Awards in January.
